Website care, backups and recovery
Website care is a repeatable routine: keep the important accounts accessible, check the customer journey and prepare a way back before changing anything. A backup is only useful if it contains what you need and can be restored safely.
Use this path to organise routine checks, prepare a recovery plan and understand which details to confirm with the people managing your site.
Keep the basics under control
Start with current contact details, renewal responsibilities and a short list of checks. Record who looks after each service so an urgent question goes to the right person.
Know what your backup can recover
List the website files, database and separate services you depend on. Ask what is copied, where it is stored, how long it is retained and who can restore it. A successful backup notification is not the same evidence as a successful recovery test.
Prepare before making a change
Know what is being changed, how you will check it and what would make you stop. A working preview is useful, but it does not replace a recoverable copy of the live site.
Treat restoration as a controlled change
Before restoring an older version, preserve the current state and check what has changed since that copy was made. Recent enquiries, orders or content may need to be recovered separately. An unfamiliar restore screen is a reason to ask the provider, not experiment on the live site.
