Check a third-party widget before installing it

A widget can add a booking calendar, map, chat or review feed, but it also introduces another provider and dependency. Review what it does, which account controls it and what it loads before installation. A convenient snippet is still a meaningful change to the website.

Before you start

  • Identify the real supplier and the customer task the widget should support.
  • Check the existing platform's supported installation route and current subscription requirements.

What to do

  1. Check whether an embed is necessary

A clearly labelled link to an existing booking page may meet the need without an embedded interface. Compare the customer experience rather than assuming more features make a page better. Keep the simplest suitable route, especially on pages already containing several external tools.

  2. Read the requested access and settings

Use official installation instructions and inspect what account or site permissions are requested. Identify who owns the tool subscription and who can remove it later. Do not paste code from an unverified message or grant administrator access merely because an installation fails.

  3. Review behaviour beyond appearance

Ask the person responsible to check scripts, cookies and data handling against the site's actual privacy controls. Third-party code can affect performance and page behaviour. Make sure important tasks have a sensible fallback if the supplier's content cannot load or the visitor declines optional storage.

  4. Test and document the dependency

Check the page on mobile and desktop with the agreed settings, without making an unwanted booking or payment. Record the supplier, purpose, owner and removal route in the handover. Remove an unused integration through a controlled change rather than leaving it loading indefinitely.

What to check

  • The widget has a useful purpose that a simpler link cannot meet as well.
  • Ownership, permissions and separate subscription costs are understood.
  • Loading, privacy choices and fallback behaviour have been reviewed.
