Keep your domain renewed and under control
Domain registration lasts for an agreed period and needs renewal to continue. Losing the registration can affect the website, business email and links already shared with customers. Auto-renewal helps, but it still depends on a working account, payment method and the provider’s rules.
Before you start
- Sign into the registrar through your known bookmark or address, not an unexpected payment email.
- Have the exact domain and recent renewal receipt available.
What to do
Check the actual account status
Read the expiry date, renewal setting and registration status in the registrar account. A paid hosting invoice is not proof that the domain was renewed. If the displayed status disagrees with a payment receipt, ask the registrar to investigate and retain the evidence.
Confirm who receives notices
Keep the registration contact address current and monitored by the business. Consider whether you could still receive recovery messages if the domain itself stopped working. Record a suitable recovery arrangement using the provider’s supported controls, with access limited to authorised people.
Plan before the deadline
Check the normal renewal price and whether the saved payment method remains valid. Put an independent reminder in your business calendar. If deciding to retire a domain, first list email addresses, documents and customer links that still use it rather than simply switching renewal off.
Act promptly if it has expired
Contact the actual registrar immediately and ask what recovery options apply to this domain’s current status. Costs and recovery periods vary by ending and provider. Avoid assuming a generic grace period gives you time, or paying someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
What to check
- Renewal is confirmed in the registrar account, not merely requested.
- The business can receive account notices.
- Your reminder is earlier than the expiry date.
