Compress a website image yourself with Squoosh

Image compression reduces the file a visitor needs to download. Squoosh is a free browser-based tool from GoogleChromeLabs that lets you compare an image with a compressed version. Work on a copy, choose a format your website accepts and judge the result visually. The smallest possible file is not always the best usable image.

Before you start

  • Keep the original image unchanged in a separate location.
  • Check the dimensions and file formats accepted by your website platform.
  • Use the official squoosh.app address and a non-sensitive image you may publish.

What to do

  1. Open a copy of the image

Open Squoosh and choose the image you want to optimise. Note its original file size so you can compare the result. Start with one representative photograph rather than a whole library, and decide where it will appear: a small service card needs different detail from a full-width banner.

  2. Choose sensible output settings

Select an accepted output format and review any resize option before changing quality. If the original is far larger than the intended display needs, a carefully chosen reduction in pixel dimensions may help. Keep enough detail for the actual placement, including higher-density screens and the crop you plan to use.

  3. Compare before and after

Adjust compression gradually and use the comparison view to inspect fine edges, faces, text and smooth colour areas. View the image around its intended display size as well as zoomed in. If a logo becomes fuzzy or text develops visible artefacts, revise the format or settings rather than accepting the smaller number.

  4. Download and verify the new file

Save the compressed result under a distinct filename and open it locally. Compare its size and appearance with the original. Upload only the approved version, then inspect the actual website crop and mobile appearance; the platform may process the file again after upload.

What to check

  • The compressed image remains clear where it will be displayed.
  • The new file is smaller and the original remains available.
  • The website accepts the format and shows the intended crop.
