Choose JPEG, PNG or WebP for website images

JPEG commonly suits photographs; PNG preserves sharp detail and transparency without lossy compression; WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and transparency. There is no single winner for every image. The useful choice depends on the picture, required quality and what your website’s upload and publishing tools support.

Useful context

  • Identify whether the file is a photograph, logo, screenshot or another graphic.
  • Check whether it needs a transparent background.
  • Keep the original and confirm your platform’s supported upload formats.

How it works

  1. Start with the image’s content

For a photograph of a café interior, compare JPEG with an accepted WebP export. For a crisp screenshot containing small lettering, compare PNG with a lossless alternative. Judge the details customers actually need to see rather than selecting a format because it sounds newer.

  2. Protect transparent backgrounds

A logo intended to sit on different background colours may need transparency. JPEG does not preserve an alpha channel, so exporting to JPEG adds a solid background. Preview the result on both light and dark surfaces before deciding it is suitable for the website header or footer.

  3. Compare like with like

Export test copies at the same pixel dimensions and compare file size alongside appearance. Changing dimensions and format together makes the comparison harder to interpret. Inspect fine lettering and edges, but also check the image at the size visitors will actually see on the page.

  4. Use the platform’s real result

Upload an approved test image through your normal editing workflow and check the published output. Some platforms generate their own delivery versions, so the upload format is not always the final format visitors receive. Keep a useful source file for future edits instead of relying on downloaded website thumbnails.

What to check

  • The chosen format preserves necessary transparency and visible detail.
  • File size was compared at equivalent dimensions.
  • The uploaded image works in the actual website placement.
