Choose the main action for your homepage
A main action is the next step you most want a suitable visitor to take. For a café it might be reading the menu; for a tradesperson it might be requesting a quote. Choosing one primary route helps organise the page without hiding other useful options or promising that every visitor will become a customer.
Before you start
- Identify the main customer type and the reason they usually visit your website.
- Choose a destination that already works, such as a menu, enquiry page or existing booking tool.
- Check who handles the resulting calls, messages or booking requests.
What to do
Match the action to the decision
Ask what the customer needs before they can proceed. A first-time visitor may need prices or the service area before contacting you. Do not force a sales call where a clear product page or menu would answer the question more easily.
Write a literal button label
Use wording that describes the next step, such as View the menu or Request a quote. Reserve Book an appointment for a route that genuinely supports booking. A label should not suggest a confirmed reservation when it only opens a general enquiry form.
Give it a clear place
Put the primary action near the explanation of what you do. Keep a secondary option for visitors who need more detail, with less visual emphasis. Repeating the same primary destination later can help without turning every section into a competing sales message.
Walk the complete route
Open the page on a phone and follow the action to its destination. Check the form fields, displayed information and return route. Agree before sending a test enquiry, making a call or creating a booking; opening a button alone does not prove delivery.
What to check
- The button makes sense beside the headline and explains what happens next.
- Its destination is correct on mobile and is not hidden behind a broken link.
- Alternative contact information remains available for visitors who need another route.
