Check your website when visitors zoom in

Some customers enlarge a website to read and use it comfortably. A page that looks tidy at its default size may hide text or controls when zoomed. Check a few important journeys at larger sizes and record what becomes difficult, rather than judging the page only from a full-width screenshot.

Before you start

  • Use a browser with its normal page-zoom controls and note the starting zoom level.
  • Choose a content page, navigation and a contact route; do not enter private customer information during the check.

What to do

  1. Increase zoom and keep reading

Try 200 per cent page zoom on a desktop browser and follow the text down the page. Look for clipped words, labels overlapping fields or information concealed inside fixed-height boxes. The exact appearance may change; the important question is whether the information remains readable and usable.

  2. Review a narrow view

At a larger zoom level, or in a narrow browser window, check whether ordinary text and controls rearrange into a usable layout. W3C reflow guidance includes specific requirements and exceptions. This simple check is for spotting likely barriers, not certifying that those requirements are all satisfied.

  3. Check what floats above the page

Inspect sticky headers, cookie controls, help buttons and other overlays. Make sure they do not leave too little room to read or cover a necessary action. Try opening and closing the menu without resetting zoom, and record any controls that disappear beyond the visible area.

  4. Capture a clear comparison

Save a screenshot at the problem zoom level and another showing the normal view. Include the page address, browser, approximate window size and the setting used. Ask for a focused correction that preserves readability rather than shrinking all text to force it back into place.

What to check

  • Important text remains readable without being cut off.
  • Navigation and customer actions are still reachable at the tested sizes.
  • The report identifies the zoom level and the exact blocked content.
