Turn a long page into clear sections
A long page becomes easier to use when its sections answer distinct questions. Headings provide both a visible signpost and a structural outline for assistive technology. Use the editor’s real heading styles rather than making ordinary text bold and large. The structure should follow the information, not whichever font size looks most attractive.
Before you start
- Copy the existing text so you can reorganise it without losing details.
- Write down the main question the page should answer.
- Identify repeated paragraphs and unrelated information before editing the layout.
What to do
Group by customer question
For a service page, useful groups might be What is included, What it costs, What we need and How to book. For a café, the groups may be Food, Opening hours and Finding us. Move paragraphs into those groups before choosing decorative section titles.
Create a short outline
Read only the proposed headings from top to bottom. They should tell a coherent story without the full paragraphs. Replace labels such as More information with something specific. If two headings promise the same answer, combine their content or clarify the distinction.
Apply logical heading levels
Keep the page’s main title as its main heading and use the next level for major sections. Use a lower level only for a genuine subsection. For example, Delivery area and Collection could sit beneath Getting your order. Do not skip levels merely to obtain a smaller visual style.
Review the reading experience
Break long paragraphs where the subject changes and turn genuinely list-shaped information into lists. Check the page on a phone, where a short desktop paragraph can become a large wall of text. Confirm that the final action remains easy to find after the supporting explanation.
What to check
- The heading-only outline explains the page clearly.
- Heading styles reflect hierarchy rather than visual size alone.
- Each section has one recognisable purpose and avoids unnecessary repetition.
