WordPress pages or posts: choose the right home
Use a page for standing business information such as services, opening hours or contact details. Use a post for a dated update, article or news item. Both can contain text and images, but they are organised differently. A page is not automatically the same thing as an item in your navigation menu.
Useful context
- Write the purpose of the content in one sentence.
- Check whether a suitable page or post already exists.
- Identify where visitors should discover the information.
How it works
Judge how the information ages
A café’s normal menu belongs somewhere customers can repeatedly find it. A report about a recent fundraising evening is a dated story. The menu can change frequently and still remain a page; frequency of editing is not the deciding factor.
Consider the listing behaviour
Posts commonly appear in a blog feed, archives and category lists. Pages provide the more permanent structure. Check your theme’s actual presentation, because a specially configured website may display these content types differently from a standard installation.
Choose the route into the content
For a service page, plan a link from the menu or relevant existing page. For a post, choose a useful category and check the news listing. Publishing content does not guarantee that the intended navigation link is created.
Preview before making it public
Create a draft in the appropriate Pages or Posts area. Check its title, address, layout and main links. Look at the listing as well as the full content, so an unexpected date, missing image or unsuitable excerpt is caught before publication.
What to check
- The content type matches the visitor’s reason for reading it.
- The intended page or news listing links to it.
- You have not published the same text as both a page and a post without a reason.
