Recover earlier wording with WordPress revisions
WordPress revisions can help recover an earlier version of a page or post. Compare the saved versions before restoring anything: you may only need one paragraph rather than the whole older draft. Revisions are not a complete website backup and do not promise recovery of every plugin setting, uploaded file or external service.
Before you start
- Copy any current wording you want to retain into a temporary document.
- Note approximately when the desired version was saved.
- Ask other editors to pause changes to the same content while you review it.
What to do
Find the correct content record
Open the affected page or post and locate its Revisions history where available. If you are reviewing a template instead, confirm that is intentional. Different hosts, settings and editing tools can retain different histories, so do not assume unlimited versions exist.
Compare changes rather than dates alone
Read the additions and removals in the comparison view. A revision saved yesterday may contain an earlier mistake, while a later one may have valuable corrections. Identify the exact content you want back before selecting a restore action.
Choose the smallest recovery
If only a sentence is missing, copy its approved wording into the current page instead of restoring everything. Before a full restore, preserve current content and review the entire old version. WordPress.com’s Restore action can immediately update the public site; do not assume another publishing step will protect you.
Verify the complete result
For a copied paragraph, preview the edited page before its final save or update. For an approved full restore, check the public result immediately. Review headings, links, prices and images: an older revision can bring back an expired offer or contact detail alongside the wording you wanted.
What to check
- The missing content has returned without losing newer necessary changes.
- Links and business facts remain current.
- The public page has been checked after any final update.
