Keep WordPress comments useful and manageable
Comments are public discussion attached to content, not a private support inbox. WordPress can hold them for moderation and notify you about activity. Decide whether comments genuinely help your business before enabling them widely; a small brochure site may have little reason to invite public discussion on every page.
Before you start
- Choose the pages or posts where discussion is useful.
- Confirm who will review comments and how often.
- Keep an obvious private contact route for enquiries containing personal details.
What to do
Review the discussion settings
Check the default comment rules and the settings on existing posts. Defaults and individual content controls are not necessarily identical. Decide whether new comments should wait for approval and which notifications the responsible person can realistically monitor.
Read before approving
Review pending comments for relevance, personal information and suspicious links. A message can sound complimentary while promoting an unrelated website. Do not open unknown attachments or links simply to decide whether a comment belongs beneath your article.
Use the appropriate moderation action
Approve a genuine suitable contribution, mark clear unsolicited promotion as spam, or remove inappropriate content using the platform controls. Keep criticism and spam conceptually separate. A real customer concern may need a private response rather than immediate public discussion.
Check the visitor experience
View an affected post while signed out to see whether comments are visible and the form explains moderation. If you disable comments, check older posts separately. Remove any stale invitation to leave a comment where no comment route remains available.
What to check
- Comment availability matches your intended discussion policy.
- Pending items have a responsible reviewer.
- Visitors can still reach a monitored private enquiry route.
