Booking button or embedded calendar: which fits?

A booking button takes customers to your booking provider. An embed displays the provider’s booking interface within your page. Start with the clearest supported option for your customers. An embed can be convenient, but a well-labelled link is often enough for a simple service website.

Before you start

  • Confirm your existing booking tool is active and correctly configured.
  • Choose the specific appointment or service customers should reach.
  • Check whether your website platform supports the provider’s current embed method.

What to do

  1. Choose a useful destination

Link to the relevant booking page rather than an account dashboard or general supplier homepage. Check the business name, appointment description, duration and any price information. The website button should not promise immediate confirmation if the booking tool only collects a request.

  2. Compare the layout options

A normal link keeps the website page simple and lets the provider handle the booking screen. An inline embed keeps that screen within your page; some tools also offer pop-ups. Calendly, for example, documents these as separate options. Use only a method your provider supports.

  3. Review mobile and privacy behaviour

Check whether the calendar fits a phone without awkward nested scrolling. For an embed, ask the person installing it to review the provider’s cookies and data handling against your existing privacy controls. Keep a direct booking link available if the embedded version cannot load.

  4. Verify without making an unwanted booking

Follow the journey far enough to inspect the service, date selection and customer fields, then stop before confirmation or payment. A real test booking needs separate permission, an agreed time slot and a plan to cancel the test and check notifications.

What to check

  • The button label explains the next step.
  • The correct business and service appear on mobile and desktop.
  • No appointment or charge has been created during an unapproved test.
