What to do when your website shows an SSL warning
A connection warning needs investigation before visitors enter personal information. It may involve the site’s HTTPS certificate, its connection setup, the network or the device. The exact wording matters: a certificate warning and a dangerous-site warning are not the same diagnosis.
Before you start
- Copy the full page address and record the warning text or error code.
- Note when it began and whether the domain or hosting changed recently.
- Take a screenshot with account details and private information removed.
What to do
Stop at the warning
Do not continue into a sign-in, checkout or contact form through an unsafe connection. If this is your business website, use an established alternative contact route while the host investigates. Never ask customers to bypass their browser’s warning.
Identify what is affected
Check the same public address on another up-to-date device or your own mobile connection, without entering any information. Note whether the warning affects only one device, one network or everyone you have checked. This narrows the investigation; it does not prove the site is safe.
Record address variations
Tell your host whether the problem affects the main domain, its www version or a particular subdomain. If another version loads normally, record that result rather than changing redirects yourself. Confirm the device date and time are correct.
Ask for a specific provider check
Send the evidence to the hosting or platform support team. Ask them to check certificate validity and domain coverage, the website connection and any recent DNS change. Retest the affected addresses after they report a fix, including the previously failing device.
What to check
- The warning has cleared without changing browser security settings.
- The expected domain and website appear together.
- Any form test happens only after the connection is restored and the owner authorises it.
