Make website phone links work properly
A number can look correct on a webpage while its hidden link points somewhere else. A working phone link uses a telephone destination, commonly expressed with the tel: scheme, rather than an ordinary webpage URL. What happens after tapping depends on the visitor’s device and calling apps, so desktop behaviour alone is not a reliable test.
Before you start
- Confirm the current public business number from an authorised source.
- List every visible number and call button, including the mobile menu and footer.
- Agree whether you are only inspecting settings or completing a real test call.
What to do
Compare label and destination
Open the link settings for each number or call button. Read the stored destination digit by digit alongside the approved number. Look for an old mobile number, a missing digit or a copied link from another page. Correct-looking visible text does not validate the hidden destination.
Use the telephone link option
If the platform offers a Phone link type, use that and follow its required number format. In an HTML link, telephone destinations use tel: rather than https:. Use the business’s verified diallable number and its appropriate international format; do not guess missing digits or country codes.
Make the action understandable
Keep a readable number visible so someone can copy it or call from another device. Label a button with a clear action such as Call the café. If calls are only answered during stated hours, place that information nearby instead of suggesting an always-available emergency line.
Check the phone handover safely
Inspect the published link on a phone only after verifying its destination. Devices may prompt, open a calling app or begin a call depending on settings. Complete a call only with permission, during an agreed time, then confirm the intended business answered if that was part of the test.
What to check
- Every call destination matches the approved business number.
- The visible text explains the action and remains readable.
- Mobile behaviour was checked without relying solely on a desktop browser.
