Check whether your contact form is easy to understand
A contact form should tell people what information is needed and help them correct mistakes. Check the visible labels, required-field wording and error messages as a customer would see them. Then separate wording you can improve in the editor from accessibility behaviour that needs a developer’s review.
Before you start
- Use a test environment where possible, or obtain permission for clearly labelled test activity on the live form.
- Agree a safe test identity and destination without using another person’s details or creating a genuine enquiry.
What to do
Read each field before typing
Look for a clear label that remains visible when the field contains text. Placeholder hints alone can disappear and leave people unsure what they entered. State whether information is required in understandable wording, and avoid asking for details the business does not need at this stage.
Try a simple correction case
With permission, check how the form responds to a missing required field or an incomplete email format. The message should identify the problem and explain what to change. Do not deliberately submit abusive content or probe technical security behaviour as part of this everyday usability check.
Check that the visitor can continue
See whether previously entered non-sensitive information remains available after a correction and whether the affected field is easy to find. Try the route with the keyboard as well as visually. Record confusing jumps or hidden messages without assuming that a red border explains the error to everyone.
Verify the difference between feedback and delivery
A clear confirmation message helps the visitor, but it is not evidence that the business inbox received the enquiry. Where delivery testing is authorised, confirm the labelled message with its recipient. Keep visual wording issues and mail-delivery faults separate when requesting help.
What to check
- Every field has an understandable, persistent label and clear requirements.
- Correction messages explain the problem and allow the visitor to continue.
- Any delivery claim is supported by a separate authorised receipt check.
