Website themes and custom design explained

A theme controls a website’s presentation within a system such as WordPress. A template is a reusable layout for a type of page. Custom design means making deliberate design decisions for a particular business; it can still use established software underneath. These terms describe different things, so none is a complete measure of quality on its own.

Useful context

  • Gather two or three real pages that illustrate your current design problem.
  • List the content and customer actions the new design needs to support.

How it works

  1. Look beyond the starting point

A ready-made layout may be adapted carefully or used with barely any thought. A custom-built page can also be confusing. Judge the finished structure, content and behaviour against your business needs rather than assuming that one production label guarantees a better customer experience.

  2. Ask what is designed for your business

A useful proposal explains the page structure, visual direction and content responsibilities. For a café, that might include making the menu, opening hours and booking route easy to find. Ask which decisions are bespoke and which technical components are standard, without demanding unnecessary reinvention.

  3. Separate appearance from important features

In WordPress, themes mainly concern presentation and plugins generally provide features. The boundary is not always tidy in an existing site. Before changing a theme, check where forms, special content and other essential functions live so the redesign does not accidentally remove them.

  4. Agree the handover and maintenance

Ask which design assets, source files, licences and editing tools you will receive or be entitled to use. Confirm who maintains them after launch. A beautiful preview is only part of the purchase; the finished website must remain manageable by the people responsible for it.

What to check

  • The proposed work describes business-specific decisions.
  • Essential features survive the design change.
  • Licensing, editing access and handover expectations are recorded.
