What is responsive website design?
Responsive design is an approach that lets a website’s layout adapt to the space available. Columns may stack, images resize and navigation change on a smaller screen. The aim is usable content across different devices, not a miniature desktop page. A responsive label alone does not prove that every customer task works comfortably.
Useful context
- Choose a real phone and a computer for a first comparison.
- Identify the main action customers should take, such as viewing a menu or sending an enquiry.
How it works
Check the content order
Open the same public page on both devices. Important details should remain easy to discover when columns stack. If a tradesperson’s phone number disappears below several decorative sections, the layout may technically adapt while still making the customer’s task unnecessarily difficult.
Try the controls
Open and close the mobile menu, use ordinary links and check whether buttons are comfortably selectable. Look for overlapping elements or controls hidden by banners. Do not submit a real purchase or enquiry merely to inspect a button; use an agreed test for transactional functions.
Look for width and text problems
Check that normal content does not require sideways scrolling, and that text remains readable when enlarged. Tables, embedded bookings and long addresses deserve particular attention. A narrow screenshot can miss problems that appear when the browser width changes or someone increases text size.
Record the exact failure
Send the page address, device, browser and a safe screenshot showing the problem. Describe what you expected to do. ‘The menu covers the booking button on my phone’ gives a maintainer more useful evidence than ‘make the website mobile friendly’.
What to check
- Important information remains visible in a sensible order.
- Navigation and ordinary buttons work on the smaller screen.
- Text enlargement does not make key content inaccessible.
