What are SSL and TLS?

TLS is the technology used to protect many internet connections, including HTTPS websites. SSL is its older predecessor, but suppliers still commonly say SSL certificate when describing a modern website certificate. For a business owner, the important outcome is a correctly configured secure connection, not choosing between two marketing labels.

Useful context

  • Open your actual public website address without entering private information.
  • Find who manages HTTPS and certificate renewal for the site.

How it works

  1. Protection while information travels

TLS helps protect information between the browser and the service it connects to against interception and alteration. That matters for contact details, account access and ordinary browsing. It does not automatically protect every copy of information after a website stores or emails it.

  2. A certificate helps identify the connection

The browser checks a certificate as part of establishing the secure connection. The certificate needs to be valid for the hostname being visited. Your main domain, www address and separate booking subdomain should not be assumed covered merely because one of them works.

  3. Secure does not mean trustworthy in every sense

A fraudulent website can also use HTTPS. Continue to check the real hostname, business details and whether the requested action makes sense. A secure connection is an essential technical safeguard, not a review of the company’s honesty or the accuracy of its promises.

  4. Make renewal somebody’s responsibility

Ask whether the hosting platform renews certificates automatically and who investigates a failed renewal. After a domain or hosting change, check the actual public addresses again. Keep security warning screenshots for support rather than asking visitors to ignore them.

What to check

  • The public addresses work without browser certificate warnings.
  • Certificate operation and renewal have a named owner.
  • Forms and data storage have separate safeguards.
