Check a suspicious domain renewal notice

An urgent renewal email is not proof that your domain is expiring or that its sender is your registrar. Check the domain’s renewal status in the account you normally use, reached through a trusted route. Some notices are scams; others sell unrelated directory listings or services using wording that resembles a necessary domain renewal.

Before you start

  • Find your real registrar from an earlier verified business record.
  • Keep the message for reference without opening its attachments or payment links.

What to do

  1. Compare the exact domain and service

Read the domain spelling and what the notice actually offers. A listing, search submission or different domain ending is not the same purchase as renewing your existing registration. Note unfamiliar wording rather than treating every message containing your business name as a genuine bill.

  2. Open the registrar independently

Use your established bookmark or type the known provider address. Check the domain’s status, renewal setting and any genuine outstanding invoice inside that account. Do not use contact details supplied only by the suspicious message to establish whether its request is legitimate.

  3. Check the account record with the owner

If an agency normally handles registration, ask through the existing agreed contact route. Compare the notice with the written responsibility for renewals. Avoid creating a new registration or approving a transfer to solve uncertainty about who pays an existing domain bill.

  4. Handle possible exposure promptly

If you already entered information or paid, tell the authorised account owner and the relevant provider using trusted channels. Preserve the message and time of the action. Ask for the appropriate account or payment review rather than quietly deleting the email and hoping nothing happened.

What to check

  • Renewal status was checked in the genuine registrar account.
  • The requested payment relates to the actual domain registration.
  • Any suspected exposure has been reported through a known channel.
