WordPress stuck on a maintenance message

WordPress can show a temporary maintenance notice during an update. If it remains longer than expected, the update may still need attention. Removing the notice is not the same as completing the update successfully, so establish what happened before asking anyone to change the maintenance state.

Before you start

  • Note when the update started, what was being updated and the last result shown.
  • Ask other editors not to start more updates or publish changes while this is investigated.
  • Find the current maintainer, hosting support details and the available backup information.

What to do

  1. Check with the person running the work

Confirm whether this is WordPress’s update notice or a deliberately published maintenance page. If an administrator is actively working, let them own the next step and ask for an update time. Two people attempting recovery at once can make the history much harder to understand.

  2. Record where the notice appears

Check the public homepage and one internal page once, noting the results and time. Keep any update-screen error privately. If the administrator can access the dashboard, ask them to inspect the completed and failed update state rather than repeatedly starting the same update from different tabs.

  3. Have the maintainer confirm recovery is safe

WordPress uses a maintenance marker during updates, and an interrupted process can leave maintenance behaviour needing attention. The maintainer should establish whether work is still active and what needs finishing before changing files. They should explain the recovery plan, including how they will handle an incomplete plugin or core update.

  4. Check function as well as availability

Once the maintenance state is resolved, review the original pages and the features affected by the update. Ask the administrator to confirm the installed versions and any remaining warnings. Authorise a form or booking test separately, and record the result so a visible homepage is not mistaken for a fully verified update.

What to check

  • One person is coordinating the interrupted update and recovery.
  • The maintenance notice has gone because the state was reviewed, not just hidden.
  • The updated components and relevant customer functions have been checked.
