WordPress critical error: a safer recovery checklist
A WordPress critical error means something prevented normal execution; the visible message is not the diagnosis. Recovery Mode can sometimes help an administrator regain access and identify a failing component. It is a route into investigation, not a complete repair or proof that the public site is working again.
Before you start
- Stop further updates or edits and note the last change you know completed successfully.
- Identify the genuine site administrator and host, using existing contact details rather than an unsolicited recovery offer.
- Ask what recoverable backup exists before approving changes to plugins, themes, files or the database.
What to do
Keep the original evidence
Record which public pages and administrator screens show the problem, with a time and screenshot. If an update, new plugin or code edit came immediately before it, include that fact without assuming it must be the cause. Keep private error details away from public posts.
Handle Recovery Mode through the owner
The administrator should check their configured email account for a genuine WordPress recovery message, verifying the site address before using its link. Recovery Mode may pause a faulty component for that administrator’s session. Keep the link private and record the named component without sharing the full recovery URL.
Agree the smallest safe intervention
Ask the maintainer to explain the suspected cause, available backup and effect of any proposed change. Deactivating a plugin can remove a form or other business feature, even if pages return. Prefer a controlled test or staging investigation where possible; do not deactivate everything or overwrite live files yourself.
Check the public site after the repair
Leave Recovery Mode only as directed by the administrator, then check the public site signed out. Review the affected feature, navigation and any separately authorised enquiry test. Ask for a record of the actual correction and future update precautions, not just a screenshot of an accessible dashboard.
What to check
- Recovery links and technical details remain private.
- The repair decision accounts for backups and the affected business functions.
- The public website works outside the administrator’s recovery session.
