Check image alternatives in Wix
Images need an appropriate alternative when they convey information that a visitor cannot otherwise access. Wix provides alt-text controls for individual images and galleries, but the location depends on the editor and element. A filename, gallery title or automatically generated suggestion may not describe the image accurately in its actual page context.
Before you start
- Identify whether the site uses Wix Editor, Studio or another Wix editor.
- Choose a small group of important images rather than changing every description blindly.
- Read the surrounding page text to understand each image’s purpose.
What to do
Open the matching image control
For an individual image in Wix Editor, select it and open Settings to find the description field. Gallery images have their own media controls. Follow the guide for the element you are editing instead of assuming the same field governs every image across the site.
Describe the useful meaning
Write a short, accurate alternative for informative photographs. For example, explain the visible completed work rather than adding a string of service keywords. Do not infer a customer’s identity, a construction material or an achievement that the image does not establish.
Review gallery and generated text
Check whether a gallery title is being used as the alternative. Replace entries such as IMG_4821 or Untitled with useful wording. If an automatic tool suggests descriptions, inspect every suggestion; fluent text can still describe the wrong object or introduce unsupported details.
Check decorative and linked images
Decorative imagery should not create repetitive noise for screen-reader users. An image-only link needs a name that explains its destination. Use the supported decorative or accessibility controls for your element, then inspect the published page rather than relying only on the editing field.
