When Squarespace changes become public
Do not assume Squarespace has one final Publish button that holds back every change. On a public site, saving a layout-page edit makes that edit available to visitors. Some changes, including navigation rearrangements and certain gallery additions, can appear immediately. Site availability, page availability and content editing are separate controls.
Useful context
- Confirm whether the whole site is public, private or password-protected.
- Identify the exact page and content type you intend to change.
- Keep a copy of the original wording and a screenshot before editing.
How it works
Check availability first
Open the Site Availability panel and read the current setting. A paid subscription does not tell you by itself whether visitors can see the site. If you are maintaining a working business website, avoid making the whole site private just to prepare a small content correction.
Prepare the change outside the live page
Write the replacement text and choose the final image before entering the editor. For example, approve a new opening-hours sentence in a document first. This reduces the time spent with a partly edited page and gives you a clear reference if something needs restoring.
Use a deliberate editing boundary
For an ordinary live-page correction, review the edit before saving and expect it to become public. For a larger redesign, agree a separate review method using disabled or appropriately protected content. Moving a page to Not linked does not make it a private draft.
Check as a visitor
After the authorised change, open the public URL while signed out and refresh it. Check the corrected text, nearby layout and relevant links. If the editor and public view differ, record both states before making more changes; repeated edits can make the cause harder to identify.
What to check
- You know which action makes this particular edit public.
- The original content is available if a correction needs reversing.
- The signed-out page shows the approved result.
