What a Squarespace export does not move
Squarespace can export some content in a WordPress-format XML file. That is a content transfer tool, not a complete working copy of the website. Styles, custom CSS and several content types are excluded. Moving to PresGro hosting is scoped as Rebuild, with the new website checked before the old service is switched off.
Before you start
- List public page addresses, important downloads and the content you want to keep.
- Identify shops, appointments, memberships and any other separately billed features.
- Keep access to original images and approved documents, not only their displayed copies.
What to do
Check the export coverage
Read Squarespace’s current export list against your site. It includes certain page content and one blog, but excludes design settings and various blocks or page types. A successfully downloaded file does not prove every image, page or feature has been preserved.
Build a short migration inventory
For each page, note whether it should be kept, combined or retired. List its images, downloads, forms and destination links separately. This gives you a way to compare the replacement with the original instead of discovering omissions after cancellation.
Retain the missing materials safely
Keep approved text and original media in a project folder with limited access. Screenshots can record the visual reference, but do not replace usable content or functioning forms. Do not publish private pages just to obtain an export without discussing the risk.
Agree the replacement and handover
Choose Rebuild for a move to PresGro, with extra migrations or complex integrations agreed separately. If only one existing page needs work, a one-off Squarespace service avoids the move. Keep the old account available until the authorised checks and switch are complete.
What to check
- Important content has been inspected, not simply assumed to exist inside the export.
- Your plan covers old page addresses and any customer-facing downloads or integrations.
- Domain, mailbox and platform subscriptions each have a named owner and next step.
