503 Service Unavailable: maintenance or a fault?

A 503 Service Unavailable response says the server is currently unable to handle the request. Maintenance and overload are possible causes, but the message is not a reason to assume either. Check whether downtime was planned, then ask the responsible provider to confirm the actual condition and next update.

Before you start

  • Keep the wording, time and affected public addresses, including any suggested retry time.
  • Check your maintenance calendar and recent provider messages before changing anything.
  • Pause non-essential editing while the site’s condition is unclear, and preserve unsaved work privately.

What to do

  1. Match the notice to planned work

Ask whoever manages the site whether an update or release is still running. If maintenance was agreed, compare the actual time with that window and ask when the next progress update is due. Do not start a second update because the first one appears slow.

  2. Respect the recovery interval

If the page provides a waiting instruction, follow it before one further read-only check. Avoid repeated refreshing or multiple uptime tools hammering the same failing site. Record whether the error remains after the agreed checkpoint, rather than treating every momentary change as a new incident.

  3. Escalate unplanned or extended downtime

Give the host the affected page, timestamps and details of any recent work. Ask them to distinguish maintenance from resource pressure or another server condition. If enquiries are affected, use an already-approved alternative contact channel while the technical investigation continues; do not promise customers a recovery time you have not been given.

  4. Verify the end of maintenance

When the owner confirms the work is complete, check public pages as a signed-out visitor and review the original symptom. Ask the administrator to confirm that the temporary response is no longer being served. Test forms, bookings or payments only through an authorised plan because page availability alone does not verify them.

What to check

  • Planned maintenance has an owner and an agreed next update.
  • Continuing failures have been reported with timings and a clear description.
  • The normal customer route is restored and temporary notices have been reviewed.
