What is a CMS?

A content management system, or CMS, provides tools for creating, organising and publishing website content. It can let an authorised person edit words and images without directly changing application code. WordPress is one example. The CMS is not automatically the domain registrar, email provider or complete maintenance service.

Useful context

  • Identify the platform used to edit your existing website.
  • List which information your business expects to update regularly.

How it works

  1. Content and presentation are related but different

You might edit a service description in a content field while the page layout is controlled elsewhere. A CMS can make approved routine updates easier, but an editor screen does not mean every design or feature change is supported without additional development.

  2. Permissions determine what you can change

Different accounts may be allowed to draft, publish or administer settings. Use the least access needed for the task. If an option is missing, first check the role and platform limits rather than sharing an owner password or installing extra tools.

  3. Publishing is a deliberate action

A saved draft is not necessarily visible to visitors. Check the status and preview the content before publishing through the supported workflow. After publication, verify the real public page rather than assuming that an editor’s success message proves every link and layout is correct.

  4. Choose around your working habits

A business changing menus weekly has different editing needs from one updating a brochure site a few times a year. Decide who will edit, who approves facts and who maintains the software. A CMS is useful when those responsibilities are clear, not simply because the acronym appears on a proposal.

What to check

  • You know where content is edited and how publication works.
  • The intended editor has a separate suitable account.
  • Someone owns software maintenance and backups.
