What does a 404 page mean?

A 404 response means the server could not find the requested resource. It might be a mistyped address, an old link or a page that no longer exists. It does not automatically mean your whole website is offline. The useful question is which address was requested and where the visitor found that link.

Useful context

  • Copy the full missing-page address.
  • Record the page, email or document containing the link that led there.

How it works

  1. Check the address and starting point

Look for an obvious copied space, missing character or incorrect path. Then use the normal website navigation to find the intended content. If navigation works but an old email link fails, the problem may be that particular historical address rather than the current page.

  2. Decide whether the page should exist

If the page was accidentally unpublished or removed, ask the editor to review its status. If it was deliberately replaced, identify the closest equivalent content. A clear decision prevents creating a redirect to a page that does not actually answer the visitor’s question.

  3. Make a small repair list

Record each old address, the desired outcome and where you can update the link. For links within your control, correcting the destination can remove the broken journey. Historical external links may need a suitable permanent redirect where the platform supports one.

  4. Keep the error page useful

A genuine missing-page response should still give visitors a sensible way back, such as navigation, search or contact details. Ask the developer to preserve the correct status code rather than making every missing address appear to be a successful page.

What to check

  • The original broken link has been retested.
  • Any redirect leads to relevant content.
  • The missing-page design offers a useful next step.
