Organic, direct and referral traffic explained
Analytics groups measured traffic into channels using the information available about its source. Organic search generally describes unpaid search arrivals; referral describes links from other sites outside other defined channels. Direct can mean the source was unavailable, not simply that someone typed your website address.
Useful context
- Open the right Analytics property and choose a date range.
- Read whether the report describes a session source or a first-user source.
How it works
Read the dimension before the number
First-user acquisition concerns how a measured user was first acquired; session acquisition concerns a visit’s source. A returning customer can therefore appear in different categories depending on the report. Keep the report name with exported figures so comparisons remain meaningful.
Use business examples carefully
An unpaid search for your menu may lead to organic search traffic. A link in a local partner’s website may be a referral. A customer copying a link into another app may leave less source information, so avoid treating the direct bucket as a precise behaviour report.
Investigate surprising changes
If referrals suddenly grow, inspect the source names and recent website or campaign changes. Check whether your booking or payment provider is appearing unexpectedly. Do not classify every new source as a successful partnership without comparing it with real business activity and configuration.
Keep measurement limits visible
Consent, blockers, redirects and privacy-focused settings can affect source collection. Your website may deliberately discard some query or referrer information. Confirm the actual setup before promising detailed campaign attribution, and use a consistent reporting scope when reviewing a change.
What to check
- The report's source dimension and date range are understood.
- Unexpected channels are investigated instead of accepted as exact customer behaviour.
- Channel figures are considered alongside meaningful enquiries or orders.
