Retire seasonal website pages without confusion

An expired promotion needs a deliberate next state. Some pages remain useful as a clearly dated record, some can be updated for a recurring event and others should be removed or redirected to a genuine replacement. Leaving last year's offer looking current is rarely helpful.

Before you start

  • List the pages, downloads and links connected to the expired offer.
  • Confirm whether the business will repeat, replace or permanently end it.

What to do

  1. Decide whether the page still answers a question

A past event recap with useful photographs is different from an out-of-date booking page. Read it as a customer arriving from an old link. If the only visible instruction is to buy something unavailable, the page needs a clearer outcome before more visitors find it.

  2. Choose update, archive or removal

A recurring Christmas menu may justify one maintained page if the current year is explicit. A historical recap can remain dated and clearly closed. If there is a genuinely equivalent replacement, plan a relevant redirect; otherwise an honest missing-page response may be more appropriate.

  3. Correct the surrounding routes

Remove obsolete navigation promotions and check old downloadable files. Replace an expired price list where the customer needs current information. Do not leave the homepage promising an offer that the destination now says has ended, and do not silently reuse old customer endorsements for a different event.

  4. Record the maintenance decision

Add a review date and owner to your content calendar. Keep the old-to-new address mapping if a redirect was introduced. Ask the developer to verify the response and sitemap behaviour after removal rather than leaving an error-looking page that still claims to be a normal successful page.

What to check

  • Availability and dates are clear to someone arriving directly from search.
  • Current links and downloads no longer advertise an unavailable offer.
  • The chosen response or redirect matches the page's actual purpose.
